Artist Greta Tomlinson (as she was then) was model for Professor Jocelyn
Peabody, the woman
Hampson included in the strip 'to be rescued'. Greta helped to draw Dan Dare
for about
three years, and put in many hours on Marooned on Mercury with fellow artist
Harold Johns.
Not much later Hampson fired both of them, ostensibly for 'disloyalty' -
they asked if they
could draw a strip for someone else. The real reason, probably, was because
they'd proven
they could work without him.
Hampson liked to take photographs to help him with his drawing.
He was especially keen to pinpoint the source of the light. Below
is a shot of most of the studio posing for a frame, and the subsequent
artwork. In the photo, from l-to-r, Hampson himself, Greta Tomlinson,
Robert 'Pop' Hampson (Frank's dad) Harold Johns and Eric Eden.
